Guitar Role: Guitar as armor
Patch Name: “Flannel & Docs”
Genre / Scene: Grunge
Approx. Year: 1991
Emerging as a reaction against arena glam, studio polish, technical control, and the larger than life showmanship and aesthetic of the 80’s, grunge turned its back on pretty much all of it. The guitar’s role simplified not due to limitation, but conscious rejection and refusal.
Sound stripped down to its studs created transparency. Transparency broadcast integrity and legitimacy. Rock clubs instead of arenas, DIY aesthetics, tear down the institutions, tear up the status quo. “We see you because we are you,” to a young generation that felt disenfranchised and invisible.

Guitar Role Compass
The guitar is armor. Rawness and abrasion create emotional immediacy through refusal of polish and structure. The sound challenges rather than invites, prioritizing authenticity over flawlessness.
North Star
To deliver emotional bludgeons by stripping away systems, plasticity, and refinement.
Latitude & Longitude
Driving emotion through rawness and organic build and collapse, rather than engineered design or technical virtuosity.
Landmarks
Guitar as attention magnet -> guitar as wall of thorns
Intentionally abrasive and inhospitable, the guitar became a barrier keeping those on the outside away from those on the inside.
Orientation
Not intended for finesse, tonal balance, or long-form emotional planning. The guitar is meant to challenge attention and attraction, not pursue or nurture it.
Pathfinding
Amp + Cab: Simple, loud amp setup favoring immediacy and raw force over control
Dirt Source: Unrefined distortion derived from basic pedals or amp overdrive
Mod: Used more to create instability than to create subtle motion
Delay/Reverb: None. The intent was to reduce space, not create more of it.
Benchmarks
